WELCOME!
I create paintings inspired by water, women, light, color, the human experience and the language of nature.
My work is intuitive, feminine, and alive — sometimes calm and coastal, sometimes bold and full of movement. I paint because I love the feeling between color and water. My paintings give shape to that feeling, create a little more air around life, and are a reminder of how softness can still be strong.
I’m so glad you’re here. I hope you find something that feels like a breath, a window, or a small piece of the world you want to live inside.
About the Artist
Cynthia Coffield is an artist living in Houston, TX. She explores contemporary motifs in painting as meditative process through a daily studio practice working in acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and gouache. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking/Drawing and Art History from Washington University in St Louis, with additional education at Glassell School of Art, Art League Houston and independent study with artists. Media includes acrylic & oil painting, watercolor, dry media & pastel drawing, ceramics, installation art, papermaking, lithography, etching, monoprint, collagraphy, photography (darkroom & digital), film, and others. Time in the ocean surfing and trainings in yoga, meditation and aerial arts influence her painting process.
WHY FLOWERS
Flowers have become one of my most important motifs because they carry beauty without force.
A flower can shift the feeling of a room. It can soften the nervous system, bring color into a difficult season, and remind us that life is still creating itself.
I became especially interested in this after noticing how often people turn to flowers during illness, grief, celebration, love, and transition. Flowers appear when language is not enough. They offer something quiet, generous, and immediate.
That is the kind of energy I want my paintings to carry.
WHY WATER
Water is one of the strongest forces in my work because it holds opposites beautifully.
It can be soft and powerful. Still and moving. Reflective and wild. It can cleanse, carry, reshape, and restore.
As a surfer, I’m drawn to the intelligence of waves — their rhythm, energy, timing, and surrender. My abstract paintings often move like water, with forms that feel like falling into a wave, tumbling through color, or listening to music through pattern.
Water reminds me that presence is not stillness alone. Sometimes presence is motion.
WHY THE FIGURE
When I paint figure work, primarily women, I’m interested in presence, softness, mystery, and interior life.
The figures are not separate from the natural world around them. Their shadows may hold blues and greens, their forms may carry echoes of water, flowers, and light. I want them to feel alive from the inside out — not posed for display, but deeply present within themselves.
These paintings are connected to the same world as the florals and landscapes: a world of color, intuition, emotion, nature, and return.
